Hormonal Intrauterine Device (Mirena or Kyleena)
A Mirena/Kyleena intrauterine device or IUD is a small T shaped device that is inserted (by a doctor) and sits inside the womb.
It slowly releases progesterone (a hormone)
Highly effective form of contraception
A Mirena can also be used for heavy menstrual bleeding and may reduce periods
It can stay there for up to 5 years but can be removed at any time if you wish to stop using the method for any reason
Fertility will return to normal after removal
Copper Intrauterine Device
A small device that is inserted (by a doctor) and sits inside the womb
A copper IUD is a highly effective form of contraception
A copper IUD does not have any hormones
It is not suitable for woman with heavy periods or strong period pains as it can makes these symptoms worse
A copper IUD can last for 5-10 years (depending on the device), but can be removed at any time if you wish to stop using the method for any reason
Fertility will return to normal after removal
Considering an IUD?
The first step is to book an initial IUD appointment to discuss whether an IUD is suitable and safe for you, and to undergo assessment for the IUD. Dr Overton will then run through the benefits and risks and discuss the procedure with you. This may involve a pelvic examination. You will be given a script for the IUD which you will have to buy from the pharmacy and bring with you to the insertion.
An IUD is insertion is a short in office procedure, which is tolerated well by the vast majority of women. In total, the appointment will be 45 minutes, however the procedure itself only takes about 10 minutes.
What is the cost of IUD insertion?
The initial consult cost will be charged at $155 (with a rebate of $76.95). The procedure consultation will cost $320. (with a Medicare rebate of $80.70).
Your IUD must be purchased from a pharmacy, the cost of a copper IUD ranges around $100-$120, while the Mirena/Kyleena is around $40.

Implanon Contraceptive Implant
What is an implanon?
An implanon is a small hormonal device, around the size of a match stick, which is inserted under the skin usually in the arm. It is a highly effective form on contraception that lasts for 3 years.
Considering an Implanon?
The first step is to book in for an initial consult to discuss the option and make sure it is safe for you. You will be given a script for the Implanon, which you will have to purchase from a pharmacy.
The initial consult cost will be charged at $155 (with a rebate of $76.95). An Implanon can be purchased for around $40 from the pharmacy.
What is the cost for the insertion of an Implanon?
The procedure will cost $200 (with a Medicare rebate of $40.70).
What is the cost for the removal of an Implanon?
The procedure will cost $230 (with a Medicare rebate of $63.25).
What is the cost for the replacement of an Implanon?
The procedure will cost $305 (with a Medicare rebate of $95.30).

Pregnancy Planning
Pregnancy planning is recommended for all women and couples. A pregnancy planning consult aims to assess and optimise the health of women planning pregnancy and their partner.
A woman’s health and wellbeing before conception can affect her baby’s health and development, there are many factors to consider prior to becoming pregnant to give the best chance of a healthy pregnancy and baby.
Dr Overton provides advice around investigations and screening that is recommended prior to becoming pregnant, as well as lifestyle factors to optimise fertility.
You are pregnant
We recommend the first pregnancy visit take place prior to 8 weeks. At this visit you will be provided with information regarding ongoing pregnancy care as well as investigations that are recommended through the first trimester and beyond.
Dr Overton is accredited to provide antenatal shared care in conjunction with The Royal Hospital for Women. Shared care is for women with uncomplicated pregnancies who will deliver at RHW. It provides personalised and continuous care with your GP before and after delivery. It provides convenience and expert care and is a more affordable option compared to private obstetric care.

A current and comprehensive travel medicine service. A convenient service that is tailored to each individual’s personal needs and itinerary.
Advice regarding malaria prophylaxis and other medications that may be recommended for your travel including most travel vaccinations, which are available on site including yellow fever vaccination.
Making an Appointment
Please advise reception the appointment is for travel medicine or select the appropriate appointment online.
Allow six weeks before your departure date for the first visit to maximize vaccine coverage. This is not always possible but is ideal. Whatever your departure date you can still get advice.
Fees
The initial consult fee starts from $110. Fees will depend on the length and complexity of your appointment.
You will be eligible for a Medicare rebate.
Vaccines will incur an additional fee. If you have private insurance with pharmaceutical cover, you may be able to claim a portion of the vaccine costs.

Please bring along details of your travel plans including the length of your trip, your accommodation and planned or possible activities. These are important factors when advising you regarding travel health so that we can give you the best possible advice.

Immunisation from birth is highly recommended for all Australian children. The National Immunisation Program covers the cost of routine childhood immunisations recommended for all children in Australia.
Routine childhood immunisations help to protect your child against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough (pertussis), polio, pneumococcal disease, meningococcal C disease, hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), rotavirus, chickenpox (varicella), measles, mumps and rubella (German measles) and influenza.
By law, there are particular immunisation requirements that your child needs to meet in order to go to childcare, kindergarten and primary school and childhood immunisations must be up-to-date before your child starts childcare and kindergarten.

Bexsero® (Meningitis B) is not currently part of the NSW Childhood Immunisation Schedule, though it has been adopted in the Schedule by other Australian states and is highly recommended.
Depending on the age of your child the regime of vaccination may vary.
3 dose schedule: children aged 6 weeks to 12 months of age
2 dose schedule: children 12 months of age+
Bexsero can be safely administered with other National Immunisation Program (NIP) vaccines. If you are interested in Bexsero or would like further information book an appointment with Dr Overton.
Preparing for Bexsero®
Fever (≥ 38.5°C) in young children aged less than 2 years is a common and expected adverse event following Bexsero administration.
Paracetamol is recommended with every dose of Bexsero for those less than 2 years of age.
The 1st dose of paracetamol is recommended prior to, or within 30-minutes of vaccination.

Good sexual health is important for everyone's general health and wellbeing. Sexual health is not only about physical wellbeing.
Sex is a normal, natural part of life, and nothing to be embarrassed about. Talking openly with your sexual partners and we can help you take charge of your sexual health.
Dr Overton will provide a full sexual health check including screening and management of sexually transmitted infections and provision of PREP.
Sexual dysfunction is something that is common. This can include low libido or pain with sex. Dr Overton can provide an assessment and management of sexual dysfunction.

Professional Statement
Dr Melissa Overton obtained her medical degree from the University of Notre Dame, Sydney and is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. She completed her training in the Illawarra region before returning to Coogee where she grew up to join general practice with her mother Lyn.
Melissa enjoys all aspects of general practice, but has a particular interest in women’s health including pregnancy care, sexual health, dermatology and paediatrics. She has completed her National Certificate in Family Planning and Diploma of Child Health. Melissa offers insertion of Implanons and IUDs (copper, Mirena and Kyleena). Melissa also has an interest in dermatology and skin cancer medicine and performs minor procedures and excisions.
When not working Melissa loves to spend time with her husband Matt and daughters Mabel, Audrey and Edith. They love swimming down at the beach whenever they get the chance.
